FAQ

What is the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music?

BM-GIM is a music-centered approach to therapy developed by Helen Bonny. GIM therapists select programs of classical music to elicit meaningful “journeys of the imagination.”

What can I expect from a session?

“In a session lasting up to two hours, you and your therapist discuss your current life situation, set goals for your work together, and establish a focus for the session. After a guided relaxation, you then listen to music selected by the therapist to address the themes that arose. You verbalize the images, feelings, sensations, memories, and any awareness evoked by the music, allowing them to become a vehicle for exploring deeper states of consciousness. Your therapist interacts verbally with you to help you develop and expand your imagery experiences. At the close of the music, your facilitator assists your return from the deepened state and reinforces your insights that arose during the exploration. You may gain new perspectives on your life issues and may feel empowered to address them with renewed energy.” (https://amibonnymethod.org/about/faq)

How should I prepare?

It is recommended to avoid caffeine and substances within 24 hours prior to your session. Also, feel free to reflect on your current life situation as a way to prepare and focus for the work. Some people find journaling or art-making helpful.

What can I expect after the session?

After a GIM session, you might feel a little out of it. It is recommended to drink water, eat, or go on a walk…something that helps you feel grounded and centered. You might not want to schedule a hang-out with some friends right after your GIM session! Sometime after your session, your therapist will also send you a transcript of your imagery experience.

How many sessions are recommended?

If GIM is a good fit for you, a series of 6 sessions is recommended, with reevaluation after session 5. It can take a few sessions to feel comfortable and trust the process of GIM, although many people find new insights even after a one session.

How much does it cost?

Training to become a Fellow of the Association of Music and Imagery is extensive, and as I am still a Level 3 Trainee, I currently offer sessions at a reduced rate. Sessions are $60; however. If cost is an issue, please reach out.
